HISTORYIHNSC Serving Homeless Families since 1992The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Somerset County was created in 1992 in response to the growing number of homeless families in Somerset County, New Jersey. A network of volunteers was formed by local religious congregations to provide emergency shelter, meals, support services to homeless families. In Fall 2003, IHN opened the doors to a transitional living facility and support program as a response to the serious lack of affordable housing in Somerset and surrounding counties. The facility is Sunrise House and the support program is Life Skills Training - Phase 2. On January 28, 2007, the complete continuum of services to which we have aspired for years, became a reality - Phase 3. With the grant of two project-based Section 8 vouchers for IHNSC clients, our first family moved into a beautiful 2-bedroom apartment owned by Trading Post Realty.
A Mom and Dad with 2 and 4 year old girls had started in our Emergency Shelter, moved to Sunrise House and now were attaining their own permanent affordable housing, complete with case management and support services.
IHN of Somerset County is part of a national network of homeless shelters providing a community response to homelessness through involvement of religious congregations. The national agency is 'Family Promise' and includes programs throughout the United States. A national meeting is held about every 18 months, where professional staff and volunteers get together to review past challenges and plan forward movement.
