What's Been Happening

From March 26 to March 31, 2010, all 3 components of IHN/SC were in frenzied activity.  All four of the shelter families were moving to their own housing in FIVE days.  The staff couldn't have been happier to fulfill our mission - EMPOWER homeless families to attain independence.  The struggle to accomplish this goal in an affluent area with little affordable housing is truly remarkable. Moving four families in a five day period was awesome.

Family One - Single Mom with 8 and 11 year old children made homeless by conditions in a prior apartment.  Mom is in school, children have mentors from Raritan Valley Community College Service Learning. Family continues Phase 2 Transitional Support.

Family Two - Single Mom had come to IHN Emergency Shelter pregnant and with a 7 year old child. Baby was born while in the Emergency Shelter.  Mom and two children moved to Sunrise House facility.  Mom focuses on literacy education and ESL. Seven year old has a tutor from RVCC.

Family Three - Mom, Dad and a 9 month old move from shelter to their own apartment. The baby born while in Emergency Shelter.  Mom is employed and Dad is benefiting from literacy education with a volunteer. Family continues in Phase 2 transitional Support Program,

Family Four - Single Mom with 2 and 9 year old children.  Mom is a full-time college student at RVCC.  This family qualified for Phase 3 Permanent Supported Housing Program.  Their home is supported through a voucher from NJ Dept. of Community Affairs.  The family can stay in state supported housing until the Mom completes her education,
